Free Agent Frenzy Day is here, let’s look at NYR targets

Opening bell is just hours away (12 EST), and here’s the latest updates on targets.

What the NYR Need?

The Rangers need to fill at least 1 center spot if not 2. A possible 3rd or 4th winger. A top pair defenseman who is right handed.

Backup

This morning Bob McKenzie started connecting players to teams he believes will have a deal in place. One was goaltender Ondrej Pavelec.

Center(s)

Since trading Stepan, the Rangers opened up a big hole at center. They are rumored on several top names available. This info is an amalgamation of insider reports.

Joe Thornton: Looking for at least a 2 year deal around 5M per. Top suitors are SJ and LA. I don’t think the Rangers can lure him here without an overpay.

Patrick Marleau: A winger, turned center who is may have an offer from SJ already for 2 years at 4.5M per. If that is the case, I’d rather the Rangers decline.

Nick Bonino: He’s 29, and is looking for a 4-5 year deal. While he could help the Rangers center depth, he isn’t replacing Stepan and he’s likely looking for about 4M per. Avoid if that is the case.

Brian Boyle: A return of Boyle has some potential. He would instantly give the Rangers an excellent face-off guy who can solidify the 4th line.

Defense

Kevin Shattenkirk…that is all in my book! The Rangers need to up their offer and give him close to the 7M for 7 years the NJ Devils may already have on the table. I still believe a deal can be done between the 2 parties that works for both sides.

Other notable free agents on the blue line (who are RH) include Dennis Wideman and Cody Franson.

  • 7yrs 49 million dollars ARE YOU KIDDING ME? You want to pay Shattenkirk Drew Doughty money? One is a player who is a dominant all around player who will be in the discussion for top dman for the rest of his career while the other was a 3rd pairing dman getting his doors blown off during the playoffs. If the Rangers sign him for that ridiculously insane contract then get ready for 7 yrs of garbage. To think they get all this cap space to blow for a dman who wants more money than guys like Eric Karlsson, Brent Seabrook, Alex Pietrangelo and Duncan Keith is criminally insane. Shattenkirk is nowhere near the level of those players. Contracts like this kill team’s future ability to sign free agents, make deals and will lead to a guaranteed buy out of that contract. This is a weak free agent class and they shouldn’t waste cap space when next year’s free agent class is head and shoulders better.

Does anyone in the organization know that Ondrej Pavelec’s save % was .888 last yr? That wasn’t good enough to be an NHL backup in the early 80’s but that’s good enough to play for the Rangers? My God, today could be an absolute nightmare for Ranger fans.

    • Well at least Larry Brooks brings some confidence back to Ranger fans worries about this team throwing money around in an article today:

Let’s get this out of the way: The Rangers are not going to sign Kevin Shattenkirk, the 28-year-old righty who has been (incorrectly) linked to Broadway since the 2016 trade deadline. Management is not diving in with anything remotely in line with the long-term contract the New Rochelle native is going to command. Indeed, several league sources believe that Shattenkirk has a $49M offer coming his way. It won’t be from Gorton.

    • say no to Shaty just got out of cap hell. We have the best goalie coach in the world and he can work magic with Pavelec.
